Glasgow AUG #3 - October 2016

CC Technology welcomed us to their offices for the first time on Wednesday, October 26th for the third official Atlassian User Group meet up in Glasgow. Like the past two events, the evening involved interesting Atlassian related talks, conversation and good food.

This time it was more deployment focused, and features a presentations from Nigel Rochford of New Verve, David McKay of Rawkode, Peter McMaster from HSBC and yours truly, junior Sysops engineer at New Verve.

Atlassian Summit 2016 - The Best Bits!

Nigel Rochford, New Verve Consulting

Our managing director Nigel started us off a recap of the best bits of this year’s Atlassian Summit even which was held in San Jose. Unfortunately we were unable to attend but as Atlassian Experts we kept up with all the goings on!

The best bits included:

  • Confluence 6.0!
  • new JIRA features like Kanban Backlogs and redesigned cards
  • the JIRA Cloud mobile app
  • larger file sizes in Bitbucket
  • Bitbucket pipelines - useful for continuous delivery
  • Statuspage, the latest addition to the Atlassian family

Containing Atlassian

David McKay, Rawkode and organiser of Docker Glasgow

Docker is an incredibly useful platform for developers and sysadmins to build, ship and run distributed applications. David walked us through how we can use Docker to deploy Atlassian applications to the cloud using images and containers in Docker, and some new features added to Docker v1.12 called Swarm which could be handy running for Atlassian Data Centre nodes!

A Series Of Unfortunate JIRA Workflows

Peter McMaster, HSBC

Peter shared some valuable experience he’s had dealing with different JIRA workflow setups - some good, and some very bad. His talk showed us how important it is to keep things as simple as possible, and how easy it is to over-complicate workflows.

Deploying Atlassian to AWS OpsWorks

Cameron Harper, New Verve Consulting

I showed off my new role of Junior Sysops Engineer and talked through our move from Amazon Web Services Auto Scaling Groups to OpsWorks and how its made it so much easier to manage the configuration of our servers and upgrading our Atlassian applications using Chef Recipes.

We’re still on the lookout for an AUG Leader, if you’d be interested in organising Atlassian User Group events - which comes with perks like free swag, inside access to the latest news, betas and updates as well as a free ticket to the Atlassian Summit - get in touch with us at info@newverveconsulting.com. More details can be found here.
