Our Inaugural Glasgow Atlassian Meetup
There are many Atlassian User Groups (AUGs) around the world, but none in Scotland, and we decided to change that. On Wednesday the 6th of July we held our first Atlassian Meetup at Skyscanner’s lovely office in the center of Glasgow, and it was a great success!
We were joined by representatives from Skyscanner, ICAS and M&G Investments, who each gave a talk on how using Atlassian tools has helped run their businesses.
Our own Nigel Rochford - Managing Director here at New Verve Consulting - started off the evening with an overview of Atlassian’s User Groups and services. There are over 500,000 teams using their tools, and more than 10,000 people attend AUG events in 25+ countries (now including Scotland!)
Nigel also talked about Atlassian’s Atlas Camp which this year was held in sunny Barcelona. You can check out our blog post covering the highlights of the event here. If you’d like to read through Nigel’s presentation, follow this link.
How JIRA has helped Skyscanner
Michael Hall from Skyscanner - our host for the evening - walked us through how the company scaled as their number of employees grew. This included the organisation of employees into Squads and Tribes, and how they use JIRA across all the Squads in their company - helping to improve collaboration between Developers and IT:
Mike also covered ways of encouraging employees to report bugs using their in-house SkyTrek model and JIRA’s Service Desk software:

Adopting Agile at ICAS
Jenna McLauchlan from ICAS - the accounting body for Scotland - gave a talk on how an 160 company introduced Agile into its workplace. She showed us how much an improvement using Confluence made in sharing documents with teams, instead of having “ugly docs floating around shared drives”.
A few of the attendees were also very keen to get back and try a couple of the Confluence gadgets she introduced us to - including Action Items. You can find Jenna’s presentation here.
Adopting Atlassian Tools at M&G Investments
Justin Low’s presentation ‘A Developer’s Guide of Atlassian Tools’ at M&G investments showed us how their development teams have adopted JIRA, Stash (now known as Bitbucket) and Confluence in their workflow and the features that come in handy the most. He went into a bit of detail on how well the Atlassian tools integrate together, or example how issues in JIRA can be linked to certain repositories in Bitbucket, as shown here:
Justin also discussed how useful JIRA’s reporting features are for viewing a team’s progress, and shared the number of issues they have raised in total now which is over 40,000! If you’d like to view Justin’s presentation yourself, you can download it here.

We’ll be hosting another AUG Glasgow event on the 17th of August. You can view details for the event at the Meetup page. You can also join the Meetup Group or the AUG Group on Atlassian’s site for more info.
In addition to this, we’re on the lookout for an AUG leader to help schedule and plan events - you can find out more here.
