Glasgow’s Second AUG

Glasgow’s Second AUG

This week, on Wednesday the 17th, we returned to Skyscanner’s office in Glasgow to hold Scotland’s second Atlassian User Group meetup.

The event featured presentations from our own Kris Siwiec and a live stream all the way from Iceland, given by Sandra Axelsdottir of Tempo. As usual, we also had some tasty food and interesting discussions that centred around less known features of Atlassian’s tools and add-ons.

Welcome Talk - Seeking an AUG Leader

The evening began with a welcome talk from Nigel Rochford, Managing Director at New Verve Consulting. Nigel refreshed us on what an AUG is and ran us through the night’s agenda.

We’re also still in need of finding an AUG Community Leader. AUG Leaders are involved in the scheduling, planning, and sharing of events and meetups. Atlassian suggests that meetings are held monthly, but they could even be weekly if you can think of some engaging ideas for the community.

The role comes with some great perks, including free tickets to Atlassian’s premier developer conference ‘AtlasCamp’ (this year it was held in Barcelona!) and the annual Atlassian Summit, free swag, and early access to product news and releases.

If you’d like to find out more about applying for the position of AUG Leader, check out the presentation, have a look at the AUG page, or get in touch with us.

How Tempo Adds Value to JIRA

Joining us via live stream, Sandra gave an overview of Tempo’s JIRA Marketplace offerings: Timesheets, Planner, and Folio. Tempo is one of the Atlassian Marketplace’s top vendors, and they also happen to be our partner!

Timesheets

Timesheets extends JIRA’s time-tracking services to provide a comprehensive time management and reporting tool.

We use Timesheets here at New Verve for recording and planning all of our team time - day-to-day work, time off, sick days, and so much more. Sandra showed us how to use the Timesheets add-on and shared some useful tips and keyboard shortcuts we didn’t know about. Tempo has also released a Timesheets mobile application that has really helped me keep track of my time.

Planner

Planner makes it easy to organise your resource distribution and provides many useful reporting tools.

Folio

Folio is used to manage project and portfolio finances within JIRA.

It can help with viewing staff capacity, availability, and cost rates. It makes it really easy to track project costs and gives many different ways to view your financial data, as well as allowing for exporting of data to other reporting tools.

Tempo provides an API with each of their add-ons so that existing billing, planning, and other tools can be extended to interact directly with each.

Customer Engagement in JIRA Service Desk

Kris’ presentation focused on different ways you can engage with users of JIRA Service Desk.

There are still places around the world where mobile internet is a real issue, so having other ways of receiving information can be really critical. Providing SMS as a notification and interaction method can not only be useful for when internet access is a problem, but can also lead to even more engagement with users:

One of our clients required such a solution that involved sending SMS messages to inform Service Desk managers that there was an urgent request that required their attention.

Kris and Nigel demoed the solution in action. An urgent request was made through New Verve’s service desk and within seconds the text message arrived to Nigel’s mobile phone.

Micro Talks

We did things a little differently at this event and had some ‘micro talks’ to wrap up the evening.

The attendees took turns at giving informal talks on solutions they have come across within the Atlassian ecosystem which led to some interesting discussion about JIRA plugins like Capture. Attendees were also keen to find out about the next release date for JIRA Service Desk - watch this space and we’ll let you know as soon as we know more!

We also touched on using the JIRA issue collector to embed an issue creator within any HTML page on a website. This can be really useful for reporting bugs, as it can be configured to send along environmental data.

Next Event

There’ll be another event coming up next month: be sure to keep checking for an announcement!

You can also join the Meetup page or follow the group on Atlassian’s own community site. Thanks again to everyone that came along, and to Michael Hall of Skyscanner for hosting us!
